June 22, 2022 12-1pm Virtual, via Zoom | Webinar – Small Business & Nonprofit Essentials: Let’s Talk About Hiring and Firing Employees California law requires businesses with 1 or more employees to follow a set of complex employment laws. As a small business owner, it is especially important for you to follow these laws, since a single employment lawsuit (or even a threatened lawsuit) by one of your employees (or independent contractors) could cause a huge business distraction and significant financial loss for your company. And it is not just about how you treat your employees once they are working at your company. Employment lawsuits can come up in many places – including, how you advertise your job openings, what types of questions you ask during interviews, how you complete reference or background checks, how you run payroll, how you provide rest and meal breaks, and how you discipline and terminate employees, among many other employment practices. For newer small business owners, this webinar will provide an informational introduction to, and real-world advice for, best practices for hiring and firing employees (even before you hire your first employee!). For more experienced business owners, this webinar will be a practical informational “refresher,” especially since employment laws often change in California. We hope you can join us for this informational webinar! Presenters: Cozen O’Connor & ICLS | To register, please visit here: https://bit.ly/ICLSHiring. Questions? Aug. 4, 2022 12-1pm Virtual, via Zoom | Webinar – Small Business & Nonprofit Essentials: Responding to Subpoenas and Preparing for Depositions and Hearings California law has strict, detailed rules when it comes to responding to deposition and business records subpoenas. As a business or nonprofit organization, it is critical to understand these rules, so you know how to effectively respond to subpoenas and other document requests. We will also discuss a “favorite” method used by former employees, which is to make pre-litigation requests for payroll and personnel records, which many times is a precursor to a lawsuit or administrative claim being filed against a business or organization. We will discuss timely responding, what to include, and risk of simply ignoring it (which your business or organization should not do). And, in the case of a deposition or hearing subpoena, it is also important to know how to best prepare for your testimony. At this webinar, we will provide answers to these questions among many others, and provide real-world advice, and best practices for responding to subpoenas and preparing for deposition and hearing testimony.
