Recovering from a fire is overwhelming, and unfortunately, scammers prey on survivors during this difficult time. Protect yourself and your loved ones by staying alert and following these key tips.

Don’t sign up or pay if someone:

  • Goes door-to-door (contractors, charities, or “government” officials)
  • Offers a deal that seems too good to be true
  • Pressures you to sign quickly

Before hiring someone, take time to do the research and make sure they are legitimate by:

  • Asking them for their license, certification, and references
  • Making sure any contractor is on your insurance company’s list of approved contractors

Before you pay:

  • Get everything in writing
  • Pay with a credit card—not cash or check
  • Never pay in full upfront

Watch for insurance scams:

  • Contact your insurer directly using the number on your bill
  • Scammers may claim you must pay immediately to keep your coverage—don’t fall for it!
